The importance of antioxidants in skin care
The production of free radicals together with reduced body antioxidant reserve is one of the main causes of ageing and disease.
Our skin is the largest organ and the effect of free radical damage is easily visible:
- Reduced skin firmness
- Premature wrinkling
- Pigmentation and skin cancers
- Skin inflammation, redness, rosacea
In other words:”premature ageing”
The importance of increasing the body antioxidant capacity through dietary antioxidants cannot be underestimated.
There is scientific evidence that dietary antioxidants result in significant improvement in the skin appearance.
The results of the study”Lutein and zeaxanthin in eye and skin health”, published in “Clinics in Dermatology” (2009) :
- Women ingested an oral antioxidant preparation containing 6 mg of lutein and 0.18 mg of zeaxanthin daily for 8 weeks
- Lipid peroxidation in skin decreased within 2 weeks and continued to decrease
- Moisture in the skin was increased as early as 2 weeks and continued to increase throughout the study
High sources of lutein and zeaxanthin:
- Vegetables:basil, spinach,parsley, kale,green pepper,red pepper,broccoli, pea, leek, carrots
- Eggs: egg yolk
- Nuts: pistachio
- Corn and grains: I would not recommend due to other health concerns
Natural colour on the plate, please!
