Hyaluronic Acid vs Bio-stimulating Fillers: The Right Filler For You

Dermal fillers have been used for many years to fight the ageing process by filling and softening the appearance of creases or folds in the skin. It does an excellent job in restoring the age related volume loss and have been effectively used to treat:

- Jowling
- Marionette Lines
The dermal filler story started with bovine collagen injections. This was subsequently replaced by synthetic collagen (hyaluronic fillers) that did not require initial compatibility testing.
In time the hyaluronic fillers were further improved to suit specific areas. They will volumise the face immediately, enhance the contour of areas such as cheeks, lips, nasolabial folds but will not stimulate the production of collagen. In general, the results can last around 12 months.

And yet, there are tissue biostimulators that have certain advantages.
More recent scientific advancements have resulted in new additions to the market such as the occurrence of bio-stimulating fillers.
The most advanced bio-stimulators will immediately volumise the area where they are injected, similarly to the hyaluronic dermal fillers. In addition they will trigger collagen production. After the filler component is broken down, the collagen stimulation continues and the body is left with the newly produced collagen.

Currently there are three bio-stimulating products available in Australia:
- PLLA product is the oldest and does a great job. It has been approved for correcting the facial volume in HIV patients.
It does not produce immediate volumisation. It requires several sessions and the results can be unpredictable. It lasts up to 24 months.
- Calcium hydroxyapatite was the first product to behave as a filler and produce immediate volume, while stimulating the collagen in the long term. It can cause calcifications into the tissue and the results rarely exceed 1 year.
- The newest product, containing PCLA has several advantages: 1 syringe gives more volume than the hyaluronic fillers. It can be used as deep implants as well as superficially under the skin. It is a great product for nose correction and chin augmentation. It gives long lasting results.
