LED light therapy exposes a targeted area of the skin to red, blue or infrared light. When the light reaches the skin, it stimulates cellular ATP which is energy for the cells. These stimulated cells are then better able to heal, can regenerate faster as well as produce collagen and elastin.
The light is also able to stimulate the blood vessels in the skin improving cell nutrition and oxygenation, blood circulation and lymphatic drainage which functions to remove waste products.
Red light only penetrates the deep layers of the skin and is used to treat conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, fine lines and sunspots.
Blue light penetrates more superficial layers of the skin however, is very intense and effective in treating and improving acne.
LED therapy is the ideal treatment for people who would rather avoid or cannot tolerate more potent oral medication. It can be used as a series of treatments alone or to enhance the effect of other treatments including laser, IPL, peels and microdermabrasion. LED therapy can also be used in conjunction with aminolevulinic acid (photodynamic therapy) to treat acne, solar keratoses and types of skin cancer.
Advantages of LED therapy include it being:
- Effective
- Pain free
- A non-irritant
- Free of downtime
- Affordable
- Suitable for all skin types
